- GORDON PAPERS (The Bell Collection) Correspondence and papers of and relating to Major-General C.G. Gordon (b. 1833, d. 1885); 1802-1887. The collection was assembled by Gordon's eldest brother, Sir Henry William Gordon, K.C.B., Commissary General of Ordnance, and extensively used by him in his Events in the life of C.G. Gordon, 1896. The papers passed to his third but eldest surviving son, Colonel Louis Augustus Gordon, during which time they were seen by Bernard M. Allen and used in his biography Gordon and the Sudan , 1931, and subsequently to Colonel Gordon's daughter, Mrs Rose Bell. Some documents in Arabic, Amharic, and Chinese have been transferred to the Department of Oriental Manuscripts and Printed Books. For other Gordon papers, see Add. MSS. 51291-51312, The Moffitt Collection, assembled by Mary Augusta Gordon, General Gordon's eldest sister, and the list of other papers under that description. Presented by Mrs Rose Bell, and her cousin, David Gordon, Esq., 9 November 1963. Twenty-three volumes.
